Distribution center enhances work environment and saves energy.

Situation > A large distribution center needed to augment their energy savings and lighting quality, and was also hoping the project would enhance the overall work environment.

Solution > High bay metal halide fixtures were supplanted by 2×4 6-lamp fixtures, and six 4’ T-8 fluorescents were put in the place of the one metal halide lamp. The individual magnetic ballast was replaced with two high output electronic ones. With these changes, the watts used per fixture was more than cut in half from 450 to 213, and the CRI rose from 50 to 75.

Benefits of upgrade > As well as raising the quality of light to a CRI of 75, the energy consumption cut by 57%. Lamplife was also increased to 20,000 hours and the restrike time was reduced to zero. The fiscal boon is an impressive annual energy savings of $134.95 and a ROI over 50%. These savings are based on 8,760 annual burn hours and a cost of $0.065 kWh; the result is a less than two year payback.
